LG Electronics Acquires Majority Stake in Athom to Enhance Smart Home Solutions
South Korea – LG Electronics has announced the acquisition of an 80% stake in Athom, the company behind the Homey smart home operating system. This move aims to bolster LG’s position in the smart home market, leveraging Athom’s decade-long expertise in connectivity and smart home technology.
Post-acquisition, Homey will maintain its current operations, with Athom committed to further developing Homey Cloud and Homey Pro. Athom’s founders, Emile Nijssen and Stefan Witkamp, will continue in their roles as executives, ensuring that the company’s vision and leadership remain intact.
Supported by LG’s extensive experience in manufacturing and global sales, Homey is set for accelerated growth. The collaboration is expected to enhance product offerings and expand Homey’s reach in the smart home market.
Integration with LG Products
LG plans to integrate Homey’s technology across its product range, enhancing connectivity and functionality for users. This integration will enable LG products to utilize Homey’s smart home platform, providing a seamless user experience.
The partnership will focus on integrating LG ThinQ-powered home appliances with Homey, as well as developing new energy management solutions. Additionally, deeper integration with LG’s WebOS is anticipated to position LG TVs as central hubs in smart home ecosystems.
