EAW ADAPTive Enhances Game Day Experience at Michigan Stadium

EAW ADAPTive Experience

The University of Michigan has significantly upgraded the game-day experience at Michigan Stadium, also known as “The Big House,” with new audiovisual technology. Utilizing the Anya 3-way Full-range ADAPTive Array Modules and Otto ADAPTive Subwoofers from Eastern Acoustic Works (EAW®), the university has improved sound projection to cover over 900 feet, enhancing the auditory experience for all spectators.

The project, led by Paul Haley, the lead audio/visual technician at University of Michigan Athletics, is part of a multi-million-dollar renovation that includes the new EAW audio system, two video boards (main North videoboard and smaller South videoboard), and upgraded lighting and production studios. “We chose EAW speakers after thorough evaluation and industry consultations,” stated Haley. “Our goal was a larger videoboard and better audio. We explored alternatives to our previous system and found EAW to best meet our needs.”

The university worked with the design firm WJHW to select the most suitable audio equipment. Mark Graham, audio consultant and associate principal at WJHW, emphasized the need for a powered loudspeaker solution for the north-side scoreboard. “EAW’s Anya met our requirements and performance goals, allowing us to maximize space usage while ensuring sound quality and the necessary sound pressure levels (SPL) for a football environment,” Graham noted.

The installation, overseen by MetInteractive in collaboration with EAW, was executed with minimal disruption. The advanced audio system comprises 28 Anya cabinets and 12 Otto subwoofers on each side, providing even coverage and high intelligibility throughout the stadium. Haley highlighted the system’s performance, stating, “The Anya speakers maintain clarity over long distances, with excellent intelligibility across the stadium. We used precise tuning techniques to reduce audio distortion from surface reflections, enhancing the fan experience.”

Additional MKD loudspeakers were installed under the overhangs in premium seating areas for sound reinforcement. EAW’s ADAPTive products offer both digital and analog inputs, essential for reliable emergency messaging. The system’s self-healing capability further enhances its reliability.

“Performance and reliability are crucial, and the Anya speakers deliver both,” Haley added. “Integrating EAW technology demonstrates our commitment to providing top-tier audiovisual experiences for our fans, marking a significant step in enhancing our stadium infrastructure.”
